As rugby fever hits the nation with the start of the Rugby World Cup in France, this week saw the beginning of a promising season for Castletroy College on the rugby scene. The Junior and Senior teams have their pre-season training done and the players and coaches were ready to show off the work from the past few weeks. This Wednesday was a busy start for the school with all of our competitive teams playing matches.
The Senior Cup team won their home game against Crescent College Comprehensive with a score of 24- 22. It was a tough game played in strong winds and rain on Wednesday but the Trojans grit their teeth and won. They are now through to the final of the city cup against Ard Scoil Rís with a date and venue to be confirmed. In the meantime they have a home friendly scheduled for Wednesday 20th September at 14:30 against Bandon Grammar School.
The Juniors played away against Crescent College Comprehensive this week in the first round of the Junior City Cup. They played in tricky conditions and fought hard, but unfortunately lost their game to a score of 10-0. They will now be looking ahead to the start of the Junior Cup with their first game scheduled for Friday 13th October against Glenstal Abbey.
The first round of the McCarthy Cup took place this Wednesday with our second years playing at home. They played Christians Brothers College from Cork in both the A and B matches. The games were a great test and they showed the potential of the entire squad. The A match saw Castletroy losing the game with a score of 7-41. The B match also saw a loss of 10-45. This would have been the first competitive match for many of the players and they showed great character as they played. Both teams will play Round 2 of the cup away in Rockwell on Wednesday 20th September with a kick off time of 14:30.
