Behind the Scenes of our School Book & Writing Clubs

By Nissi O'Brien, TY

We all know that Castletroy College is the most vibrant school community, but do we all know what goes on behind the scenes of our extra-curricular clubs? This week we met with the Book Club and the Creative Writing Club to see what they are all about.

Book Club is is located in room 48 at 12:35 until 13: 15 on Thursdays. It is open to all year groups and has a very relaxed atmosphere. The club is facilitated by Ms. Morrison and Ms. Tully, who borrow the books from the City Library so that the members do not have to worry about buying them. So far this year, the club have read three books, all spanning different genres.

Writing Club is located upstairs in room 87 on Friday's during both lunch times. The club is facilitated by Ms. Cosgrave, and Ms. Tully often dips in too. This also has a very relaxed atmosphere as the club discuss writing, play games and chill out.

Some of the members of both of these clubs recently met with author Helena Close for a writing workshop, which was super fun and informative. The workshop took place in the City Library, where Helena chatted about her life as a writer and played some writing based games. They look forward to meeting more authors as the year goes on!

Both clubs are open to everyone and love to see new members. For more information on these little hubs of magic, please read some of my interview with the members below:

Q: Why did you choose to join this club? And would you recommend this club to anyone else?

  • Because it’s a good way for me to get back into reading more.
  • Anyone who wants to start reading or already reads a lot.

Q: What book are you currently reading, and what is it about?

We just started ‘Everyone Dies Famous in a Small Town’. It’s a collection of stories of teenagers in different small towns and throughout the book we see how they are all connected.

Q: In your opinion, what are the benefits of joining this club?

It encourages you to read more and to widen your genres and is a great way to make new friends!

Q: Are there any books you’re looking forward to reading?

No, we haven’t decided yet what book we’re reading next, but I’m looking forward to finding out.

Q: Do you have any general tips for people who would like to begin reading?

Start with something you’ll know you’ll like, lif you like rom-com movies, read a rom-com book, and don’t try to read anything too long and daunting, start with something easy and simple.
